I played with a slow shutter speed for my photography class (which is now over) and these are a few examples of what I got. The blue pictures are from a small LED keychain and the white is from a flashlight. Todd drew most of them which is hard to do. He is very talented, don’t you think? :D

Wild! I've got to have you come over next week to try out taking pictures of Becca - what's your schedule like?
OK, I don't quite understand how that worked, but it looks really cool!
Those are great! So, what settings did you have for the golden retriever shaking the water off?
And the light pictures? Did you use a tripod? The dog brings back good memories of our Annie!
For the light pictures, the shutter speed has to be slowed way down (10 to 20 seconds) and the camera has to be on a tri-pod or non-moving surface. I had to put the focus on manual setting because in pitch black the camera was having a hard time automatically focusing :) Todd then drew slowly & blindly with a light in the dark to create a picture effect.
For the dog, the shaking off picture is what they call "freezing" the action. You have to have a fast shutter speed & on that picture was 1/100 second, which is fairly fast.
Some of the basic point & shoots may allow you to change the aperture & ISO & shutter speeds which all play together with the light in a picture. If you have S (or Tv), A (or Av) & ISO icons, you can change all that yourself.
That's awesome, I've always wanted to do that, I guess I have to buy a better camera!!!
