Potatoes!

To experiment with more container gardening, I planted a few potato “eyes” in pots awhile back. The plants grew rather quickly and within a couple months I was able to dig them up. The plant pictured below was taken only after a few weeks and ended up getting about 2 feet tall. I read online that you should only plant from seed potatoes because you risk disease from store bought ones. I bought one small red seed potato from a local food stand and from that one spud I got about 5lbs of potatoes! It was a fun experiment and pretty cheap too :)

August Blooms

Here’s what’s blooming in the garden now. The pink lily pictured is on a stalk taller than me! I never knew they could get so tall :)

Canoe Camping

Todd & I spent Saturday & Sunday camping with our Canadian friends Jason, Leah, Ben (the baby), & their dog Sophie. The interesting part about the trip was that we had to canoe 3 hours to our campsite. It was a lot of work but fun too! We went to Ross Lake which is mostly in Washington, but we entered from the Canadian side because the camping & parking  were free :)

Saturday we paddled our way to the campground called Little Beaver. There are a handful of sites that are on a first come first serve basis. The campground was surprisingly busy, but we did find a site up a trail overlooking the dock. We were a little far from the outhouses, but I came prepared with toilet paper :) After camp was set up,  we went for a swim along the rocky shoreline. When we got in, there were thousands of little fish everywhere! They liked to nibble on your legs so you had to keep moving while in the water. I eventually got used to them :)

After our swim we canoed up a small inlet towards a hidden waterfall (we could only hear it at first). It was a little tricky getting to the falls because we had a layer of floating logs blocking our way. Once we maneuvered past the logs, we had to paddle against the stream current to see the waterfall around the bend. It was worth the effort, the waterfall was pretty!

That evening we saw smoke from a forest fire we heard was just over the mountain. It seemed to die down not too long after we heard that, no worries.

Sunday we woke up early and had blueberry pancakes. For an experiment, Todd suggested adding M&Ms to the last of the batter. They were definitely interesting, but not too bad :) We soon packed up and were on our way home. It was short, but a fun trip with our friends. We look forward to doing this again sometime!

Fair Fun

I try to visit the Northwest Washington Fair every August to see the farm animals and events. The last couple years I have gone with my friend Jessica and her son, Jimmy. This year, while walking around the animal barns, I noticed something about the pigs. The ones sleeping all had smiles on their faces, poor things, if only they knew their fate :) A note on one of the pictures, the horse that looks like he’s being vacuumed is being vacuumed or “groomed,” whatever they call it these days :)
