So back in April or May until mid-June, we had some fuzzy little pets residing with us. Every time Ada would see a fuzzy caterpillar crawling outside, she would pick it up and take it inside to keep. We hosted 7 of these guys (I think they were Silver Spotted Tussock Moths) in a nice tiny terrarium complete with twigs, dirt, and their favorite flavor of fresh maple leaves. I tried numerous tree & shrub leaves until we found the “right” ones! One by one they turned their fuzzy bodies into nicely felted cocoons for themselves.
Finally, after several weeks and fearing they all had died, we saw a moth sitting atop his cocoon. Then we found a couple more. It was neat to see tiny little holes where the moths escaped from their fuzzy pods. We did lose 2 out of the 7, but that’s not too bad. I’m not even sure if we should have set them free since they may be a nuisance to the farming community :) It was a fun experiment to say the least. It was also a good teaching lesson relating to the Christian life and how we too have been transformed into new creations through Christ (2 Cor 5:17).
